Rescue 5 is stationed out of the very same firehouse in which my dad, Joseph Mondello, worked out of. He was the chauffeur for Engine 160 which now shares the station house with Rescue. These guys have been protecting
Staten Islander's
for many years. My cousin Kevin Reilly is a member of Rescue 5. On 9/11 his shift had just ended and he had gone home for the day. When he heard the news of what happened, he grabbed his gear and drove to the Staten Island ferry enroute to the Trade Center. By the time he had made it to the ferry, the south tower had already collapsed. During the ride towards manhattan, he witnessed the collapse of the north tower. He was just minutes away from being apart of the collapse. Unfortunately, the whole on-duty shift for Rescue 5 were already on the scene helping to save lives. 12 men were on that shift.... but only 1 survived the days events. It's something that you just can not comprehend. This page is just a very small tribute and thankyou to the fierfighters of Rescue 5 who lost their lives trying to save others. Look at their photo's... you're not looking at statistics... you're looking at you and me... you're looking at family and friends... someone's daddy, husband and son.  Never lose sight of that! Help to make sure that they are NEVER forgotten!
The last 2 photo's on the page down below are just a small reminder of why we should respect... support... and be
proud of
ANYONE who wears a uniform of any kind and protects us from harm. It's just maddening to view! I stare at them still and tear up! Look at what these hero's walked into... it's true courage that I will never know!!!!
