Take a look at these beauties! This is Weissglass ball field down on Forest Ave. These photo's were taken in July, of 1972. This was where West Shore Little League played their Babe Ruth league games before the field over on Walker Street was built. That's Joey Mondello running towards first base and pitching. Our cousin Kevin Reilly is number 16, coaching over by first base. I'm pretty certain that number 5 is Larry Minto. The big guy in the red pants is Willie Swinton, he was the coach. Remember Willie? How great was he! They played on a team called Western Union International. There was a big WUI on there hats. Christ, just look at that field.... it looks like land-mines just exploded all over the place! Did we have some great times up at this field or what? Remember playing ball all day, then risking our lives to get to the coldest water fountain in the world in the Weissglass truck depot across Forest Ave. That's the very same home plate where we burned all of those dead Christmas tree's. Remember when Michael Baroz got wacked in the head with the ball as he was running to first base during one of the Polly Games. This is the field where George McGuire got pummeled on every play, while he was playing quarterback for the Mariner's Harbor team. Cary's arm got broken by Ricky here, Louie Civale was challenged by 12 guys from M&M's deli, he ran home, changed into his karate outfit, came back, did head-over-heel cartwheels across the whole outfield and back, then all 12 guys from M&M's deli apologized to Louie for starting with him. I could go on forever about this field..... this stupid field played a very big part during our hanging out years! It was great to have a place to go to like this where you could just lose yourself in being a kid! |
